Nicola Ranger

Senior Adviser on Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance, Department for International Development (DFID)
Dr. Nicola Ranger is a Senior Adviser on Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance at the Department for International Development (DFID) and is currently acting Director of the Centre for Global Disaster Protection. Her portfolio includes policy and programmes on sovereign disaster risk financing, innovative finance for resilience and forecast-based financing.  Nicola has fifteen years of experience working in policy analysis, scientific advice and research related to catastrophe risk management across Government, academia and industry. Prior to joining DFID in 2013, Nicola was a Senior Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences focussing on risk, decision making under uncertainty and insurance. This followed previous positions at the catastrophe risk modelling firm, Risk Management Solutions, as well as in the UK government in Defra and HM Treasury. She has written more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to several major reports, including the Foresight report on Future Disasters, UK National Climate Change Risk Assessment, the IPCC Special Report on Extreme Events and the Stern Review. Nicola has a PhD in Atmospheric Physics from Imperial College London.
